The Great Roadtrip, 2016
We are 5 days into a phenomenal family road trip and it seems like a good time to seize a pocket of quiet and blog. Since we are with 2 of my sisters and their families, and since my family gets up the earliest, I have a little bit of time before the chaos ensues.
We started driving on Weds afternoon and meandered our way to Chicago, where we picked up a 25’ RV from Cruise America. We’ve loaded that puppy up and continued our meandering over to Rapid City, SD. Let me tell you, this is not a place I ever thought I’d be visiting. First, it’s not easy to get to from where we live. Second, it’s South Dakota. Not really a main tourist attraction. I’m happy to say I was wrong. It’s absolutely beautiful out here. I knew it would be, but sometimes you can know something and ignore it until it’s right in front of your face.
The journey so far has been really wonderful. Driving in an RV allows flexibility for the kids to be comfortable, color at a table, play their gadgets, grab snacks, and (most importantly for us parents) go potty whenever the heck they need to. We’ve been having a bit of trouble with accidents from our 5 year old, and I’m super happy to report that when she has a bathroom 3 feet away from her at all times, she does great. Not sure how that will apply to the rest of life, but it’s a step in the right direction.
The only downside to this trip is that it looks like Matt picked up Lyme Disease a week or 2 ago, and he’s not feeling super hot. Thank goodness for a Doctor Sister who could diagnose and prescribe on the fly. He’s a bit tired and lethargic, and I’m really appreciating having the rest of the tribe here to help out. I’m also (obviously) very worried about him and trusting modern medicine a lot right now.
