HOUSE!
We couldn't resist. We bought a house.
Well, there are still a bunch of hurdles before we have keys in hand, but theoretically we could be homeowners by the end of March. Woot! (Ever since I learned that is short for "Wow, loot!", I've been infatuated with using it. I'm not even a gamer. I just like the idea that it's short for something that has "loot" in it. And yes, I know other people think it means other things. You're wrong. I'm the official word on this matter.)
Back to the house thing... We started browsing the Florida market when we moved here in October. In January we decided to make it official and found a realtor. (I used Homegain.com. It made me a very happy camper.) Since then we've seen about 10 houses and driven by and discarded at least 15 more. We're in a lease until September 1st, so our thought was to start with a cheap budget and then bump it up each month as our lease end approaches. The first round of houses were under $150k. They nearly all had sinkholes. The next round of houses was under $200k. We put in a $200k offer on a sweet little house that backed right up to a cute little city park. Somebody beat us to it. Then we decided to revisit a house we had seen earlier and realized that even though it wasn't perfect, it hit all of our "must haves" and most of our "nice to haves". The big downside is that it backs up to a road (but has a 6 foot fence). Still, it's in a great neighborhood in a perfect location for our lives (i.e. - Matt's work, B & E's daycares, restaurants/Main St) And to top it all off - final cost to us is about $165k. Ridiculous. The kitchen and bathrooms will need some updating, and the carpet needs to be replaced. So I'm REALLY excited, because you KNOW all I really want is a place to decorate and re-decorate :) IKEA here I come!!!!
Here is the listing with a few things edited out for privacy.
