Food Budget Challenge

I'm tightening up the Shea household finances after the 2 month holiday binge. I've reduced our monthly subscriptions from $303 to $152 by downgrading to basic cable, downgrading my gym membership, and getting rid of under-utilized services like audible.com. (Somerville library lets you download audio books from their sight. Amazing!) I'm also considering dropping the bi-weekly house cleaning ($45 each time), but not convinced that the pros outweigh the cons on that one.

The next thing to tackle is for both my bank account and my health... a food budget. The fuzzy premise is to spend $300-$400 (whole family) over a month-long period on food, dining out, and alcohol (Brynna's gonna be irate about giving up her alcohol budget, I just know it). I haven't looked for sure, but I think we averaged about $800 each month on those combined expenses. Recently we got a bit better about planning meals for the week and getting the groceries in one go. However, considering that 1 night out at a bar with my friends will set me back about $100, and dinner for 2 is usually $80, I don't think groceries are the biggest culprit. Plus, remembering to bring a lunch to work is freakin' hard when you're trying to also get a small whirlwind out the door who keeps taking things out of your hands and dropping them all over the house....

A few other people are joining me in this food budget challenge, and you're more than welcome to join us as well. The exact budget amount will be determined after I get a better idea of what the majority is currently spending I think...
