Miraculous Morning
My goal this year was to really incorporate reading good business books into my life. There must be a reason that people are always recommending them! The one that I'm working through now is called Miracle Morning, and the concept is super simple: get up an hour early and work on personal development stuff. One of the quotes in it is from one of my favorite priests, Matthew Kelly.
So even though I want to be fit and learn to play the drums and join a choir and spend my days making memories with my kids and traveling, instead I spend my days doing work so that I can make money so that I can theoretically have the time to do these things in the future. And let me tell you, doing all work all the time has put me in a bit of a dark place mentally these past few weeks.
The first thing on my list of personal development is getting fit again. I ran a half marathon in the fall and then stopped working out. And the thing is, I know that exercising helps keep me happy and emotionally balanced. I actually get fierce headaches when I stop being active. But there's something about the winter that makes me want to hibernate.
The second thing on my list is to journal more. I've already started doing this because I need to release some of the stress in my life. Running helps with mental reflection, and writing things out helps even more.
The third thing is to keep reading these inspiring books. So far I've read Leaders Eat Last (didn't finish it; it bored me.), #girlboss, and Blink. Now I'm working on Miracle Morning. I'm not sure any of them have changed my life, but I've really enjoyed the last three. I'm also reading Millionaire Real Estate Investor and a Financing book by the guys from Bigger Pockets.
I've also blocked out family time on my calendar. Twice a month on a Saturday morning we are going to get up and go on an adventure. I'm hoping that by actually putting it on the calendar, I'll protect the time from other invasions. And now I'm off to shower and figure out my work day.
"On the one hand, we all want to be happy. On the other hand, we all know the things that make us happy. But we don't do those things. Why? Simple. We are too busy. Too busy doing what? Too busy trying to be happy."
