A small plunge
I have a little obsession. Some people play video games, or read books (which I also enjoy), or lift weights, or go skinny dipping. My hobby is DIY stuff. I like that term, because it allows me to dabble in all kinds of craftiness without tying myself to any particular medium.
I went through a drawing phase (pastels - I've got 2 of my pictures in my living room)
A wall art / painting phase
A sewing phase (made a bunch of purses with Naomi and Jessica, but tracking down pictures is difficult).
Infusing stuff.
And the list goes on. Basically I'm living out the Home Ec class I never had. There are few crafty mediums I haven't tried - oil-based paint comes to mind. Learning to preserve stuff with jarring/canning. And this obsession isn't limited to what I create in my spare time. It has very much taken over what I read and look at. DIY blogs? All over that sh!t. YoungHouseLove, House*Tweaking, BowerPower, Flipping Junkies, Making a House a Home... there are more. There are many more. Amen for Google Reader and Feedler on my iPad. And don't even get me started on my BHG or Real Simple magazine, or Lowes creative ideas emails, or Pinterest (ACK! PINTEREST! I both love and hate you. Going to Pinterest is the ultimate time suck and best avoided at all costs. There is no way to leave there without feeling like a) you need to quit your job so that you can have time to do all the awesomeness. and b) you need a better job so that you can have money to do all the awesomeness. and c) you actually just need to win the lottery, thus fulfilling A and B. And also, you can't have those hours of your life back.)
So anyway, among the rotating list of Life Possibilities, the one that I'm toying with now is starting my own DIY blog. But I already have 2 blogs. One that I'm pretty good about, and one that I try to hit once a month with kid updates for the family. (They've probably stopped reading it given my spotty postage.)
The nice thing about blogs is that they only take time. And really, I have so much of that to spare! Ha. Ha. Damnit woman, you really should not do this. You're going to do this. Maybe.
The reason that I don't want to put it on here (and will probably migrate previous DIY posts to the new home) is because I don't know that I want someone looking for "How to build a playroom castle" to end up reading about the past 5-10 years of my life. (And they will. I've read some of the comments at the other sites. Some people will stalk the crap out of you without having the pleasure of ever sharing your table.) At least, I don't want to share until I go back and reread all that junk and approve it for more than 10 potential Google hits. Damn you, Google. I hate and love you too, but it's not you, it's me.
Anywho, that's today's hairbrain scheme.

I love it! And really, you CAN do it all in one place. YHL (who I also love reading) dedicates their main page to the DIY stuff (with a smattering of personal posts), but has a whole section on their blog dedicated to family/Clara/Burger/etc. It's all centrally located, just organized. I say go for it!
ReplyDeleteOh yea, they do. I forgot about that. I obviously only read the DIY stuff :) Birgs, you can be my side-kick guest blogger and show off all your fun new house crafties!
