Et in Terra Pax
I have joined the Christmas choir at my church and I am so over the moon about it. I was literally in choir in the womb, and it is a very visceral part of me. I sometimes think that I only go to church to have the music sooth my soul, and I am, admittedly, a choir snob. Give me some good ol' fashioned SATB hymns and I am as close to heaven as I am likely to get. Although I try not to judge church choirs harshly - it is a wonderful gift they give, even if they're not perfect - my opinion of a parish hinges on the homilies and the music.
Anyway, the reasons why I haven't been in a choir in quite some time are many and sometimes lame. But this year, we have made the monumental decision to do Christmas at our very own house. I am both sad and elated at the same time. It is the beginning of a new chapter in our lives, for sure. One of the upsides is that I joined the midnight mass choir. And prior to midnight mass we are doing a beautiful 45 minute concert of Christmas music. Even if there isn't a single person there to watch us, for me it will be worth it to spend my Christmas Eve singing amazing music. There is one particular piece that I can't get enough of at the moment, and that is the reason for my blog. It is "Et in Terra Pax", by John Purifoy, and it is divine. You can listen to it here, and I definitely recommend you do. Actually, parts of it remind me of Eric Whitacre's youtube sensation "Sleep".
