some good, some bad

there are 2 things i want to blog about. we'll start with the fretful one and end with the happy one. first, lay offs. no, i have not been laid off. but yesterday we interviewed a guy who had been (in November). one morning he comes in, they call him to HR and say "we're closing the Chicago office. pack up your stuff and go. you'll be paid for the next 2 weeks, but don't come back in." it was a wednesday (i asked). then this morning on NPR i hear a woman talking about how she got laid off. same thing - no warning - just an email from HR saying that their division was being closed. pack up and get out. now she has to sell her house before it goes into foreclosure. and this makes me paranoid. that one day i can walk into my office to get a call/email from HR saying "see ya!" i don't believe that my job is really in danger. matt's job may be though. he works for a government contracting company that does defense R&D. while i doubt his company will go out of business, i do believe that it could get downsized. i guess the same is possible for mine...

but let's not dwell on that! on a positive and very cool note, i discovered the website Letter to My Body and i think it's awesome. at first i thought i could just do my own version very quick, but after reading this woman's, i felt the bar had been set high and i needed to put a little more effort in. this is something i've been thinking about for a while. sad about how the beautiful women that surround me all have deep dark nagging body issues. how i, post baby and looking almost as good as i ever have before, also have body issues. and how (let's be honest) we're never going to look better than we look today. most likely it's all down hill from here, so if you can't love yourself RIGHT NOW, in your youthful and healthy 20s, then you've probably got a very long and painful few decades ahead of you.

so stay tuned for my very own letter to my body (eventually) and feel free to write your own! if you want, i can post them anonymously here. but no pressure. :) happy friday!

  1. Dear Body,

I’m sure you’ll be happy to hear that I’ve decided to stop comparing Mom Body to College Body. The truth is: we were both more fun a few short years ago. I realize now that even though the numbers on the scale are back where they were, the pounds themselves have been somewhat redistributed. I was a little disappointed that you gained approximately twice as much pregnancy weight as I discussed with my doctor, but I much appreciate you losing it all with very little effort on my part. Oh, and the kid turned out great, too.

So, Body, this spring when I get out the warm-weather clothes, I promise to pack up everything I’ve ever worn on a spring break and pass it on to my younger, slimmer sister. It’s time to accept that this is the shape you are going to be for a while. It’s time… to go shopping!!

    Affectionately,
    Cathe

here here on the shock of lay-offs. my company just did a round last week...and surprise, it was on Wednesday. 2 good friends (one with a baby and another one on the way) of mine gone with no indication of what's to come, if anything, of their future with the company. There's definitely an air of uncertainty.
