myspace thought #3
myspace is a pretty interesting phenomenon... i'm assuming that what i do is what most people do, and if that's the case...
every once in a while i'll go through my "friends" and read all their comments. this is, i feel, an amazing social thing that's happening. for some reason, people who could just as easily shoot an email, would rather instead post a comment for the an entire community to see. usually these comments are little glimpses into other conversations, or tidbits of stories of wild nights out, but what i want to know is - why do we do this? does it make it somehow more real if we give the whole world a peek? does it validate that yes, indeed, we are really friends? is this a spin-off on the cool-kid syndrome - a way to give other people a glimpse into what they are missing out on, our other exciting friendships?
the comments i really enjoy receiving are ones from people that i rarely talk to. a little touching-base with an old friend/acquaintance that says "hey, i remember you! not only that, but i like you still, and every once in a while you cross my mind". the notes are a nice little hello and don't require any in-depth small talk about life paths and realities. (although many times it leads there, but the lack of obligation is the joy of it) what i can't seem to get overly excited about is comments from those people close to me. like, when i see a girlfriend and boyfriend posting comments on each other's pages - seriously, don't you talk all the time? don't you see each other pretty often? it just feels fake to me. (now my friends are going to shun me and there will be no more myspace love for this girl.) :) what i'm saying is, i send about 30 emails a day to the same 5 people. and they are fun, witty, entertaining even. so if you're putting up a comment on my page, you're probably not doing it for my gratification alone (unless, of course, you just want me to feel loved :))
i'm still a willing participant in this remarkable movement, and i know my feelings will probably evolve as it does. but that's where i stand right now. i'd be very interested to hear what other people think...

you are correct: my most recent post to your MySpace page was actually less for you than it was for the rest of the world. I wanted everyone to know what an awesomely clumsy person you are :-)
