The wrong day to piss me off!

In a little spin off of my blog below (which you probably haven't even had time to read yet), I found out through Joy that the MA Dept of Public Safety now wants to put climbing walls (in rock gyms) under the category "Amusement Devices" so that they can subject them to regulation. (Read article)

In response, I typed up and sent the following letter out to the addressee, as well as 2 newspapers. Take THAT!

To Whom It May Concern:

Dearest Department of Public Safety, oh glorious office, valiantly protecting the health and well-being of our dear Massachusetts citizens. Please, stop.

I am writing with regards to the proposed regulations on climbing walls. I just can’t take it anymore. Stop spending taxpayer money and time on regulating every damn thing. Climbing walls at rock gyms are not an “Amusement Device”. They’re called rock “gyms” because they are recreational sport facilities. Climbing a rock wall does not inspire the shallow and fleeting “weeeeee” of an amusement park ride, but most definitely the muscle discomfort and sense of accomplishment of any sport. Without belittling the gentle little folk that work in your esteemed building, I have to admit I have my serious doubts that you can sympathize with that feeling. And I can’t help but think of all the monetary spin-offs this little piece of regulation will engender in license fees, inspection man-hours, and probably (sad to say) government kick-backs.

I realize that I, merely one voice who has no impact on your salary, budget, or political capital, will remain unheard. I look forward to writing many more of these letters in the coming years when I see you out regulating the ski trails – after all, they may be icy. Lots of potential danger there. And in my gym – those treadmills can move pretty fast. I might fall off and break something. I also know that I, merely a sports enthusiast who has spent many hours learning and honing my skills (I admit, not without a few scrapes and bruises), should not be held responsible for taking up a sport without garnering a little knowledge. Thankfully, you will be out there protecting me, thus enabling more morons access to those sports which, if Darwin had his way, would be restricted to the truly capable.

Sincerely,
Rebecca M. Shea, Citizen
